Aberporth Cadets

The Squadron was formed in 1941 and disbanded following the end of the Second World War. It reformed in 1961 under the command of Flt Lt J B Armstrong, parading at the Town Hall in Cardigan.

In 1966 the squadron moved out of Cardigan to a new Headquarters at RAF Aberporth.

The facilities at the Squadron headquarters were subsequently used by HRH the Prince of Wales whilst he was a student at Aberystwyth University and learning to fly out of RAF Aberporth.

During 1976 the Squadron was visited by Margaret Thatcher.

In 1984 the RAF moved out of Aberporth and the whole of the airfield site was put under the control of the MOD. In August 2002 the MOD started to withdraw from the airfield and in 2003 the Squadron was asked to find a new Location for its Headquarters.

Following a period of uncertainty, in 2004 MOD Aberporth offered the Squadron its current Headquarters at Building D4, MOD Aberporth.

D4 D4

The Squadron took occupation in August 2004 and the building was officially opened on 7th October 2005 by the 1961 commanding officer Flt Lt J B Armstrong.

The Squadron is located in a sizeable brick built building sitting in its own compound near MOD Aberporth. The compound is under the control of MOD Aberporth with QineticQ Security Service regularly patrolling the perimeter.

The compound has recently been fenced giving the squadron a large secure area for camp craft training and Sports, we also have a good area for drill practice.

Building D4 has excellent classroom facilities for syllabus training as well as a large conference sized room that could be used as a wing training facility if required.

The squadron’s catchment area is large, with a radius of approximately 20 miles. The nearest squadrons at Aberystwyth, Carmarthen and Haverfordwest are all at least 30 miles away..
